Create other charges with their own GST
Some charges, such as hallmark or testing charges, have a different GST rate from jewellery. Set them up once as service items, and one bill can carry both 3% and 18% lines.
Why this matters
- Jewellery is billed at 3% GST, but services like hallmarking are often 18%.
- Each charge keeps its own HSN/SAC code and GST %, so the bill shows the right tax.
- Staff pick the charge from a list instead of typing it each time.
Key features
- Create Service: charges are service items, made from the Items list. There is no separate charges setup.
- Services category: keep hallmark, testing, polishing and packing charges together.
- Own GST %: each service item has its own GST %, for example 18%.
- ADD SERVICE: a button on the sales bill to add a service line.
The demo account already has an item Hallmark Charges in the category Services with GST 18%. You can copy that setup.
Before you start
- Check with your auditor which GST % and SAC code apply to each charge.
- Know the usual amount for each charge, for example ₹45 hallmark charge per piece.
Steps
Open Create Service
Go to the Items list. Click the arrow next to Add Item and choose Create Service.
Fill the service
Name it, for example Hallmark Charges, pick the Services category, enter the SAC code (for example 998346, an example only; confirm with your auditor) and set GST % to 18. Save.
Add it on the sales bill
On the sales bill, add the jewellery line as usual (3%). Then click ADD SERVICE, pick Hallmark Charges and enter the amount.
Not confirmed yet: that the service line shows 18% on the bill while the jewellery line stays 3%. Check the GST % on each line before saving.
The Other Chg column and the making charge (MC) on a jewellery line cannot have their own GST. They take the jewellery line’s GST. Use a service item when a charge needs a different GST %.
Field reference
Making charge is part of the jewellery line (the MC field). Make it a separate service only if your shop prefers to bill it that way.
FAQs
Can one bill have 3% and 18% GST?
Each line uses its own item’s GST %, so it should. This is not confirmed yet, so check GST % on each line before saving.
Should I add making charge as a service item?
Usually no. Making charge goes in the MC field of the jewellery line and takes its GST. The MC and Other Chg columns cannot carry their own GST.
What SAC code should I use?
Ask your auditor. 998346 in this page is only an example.
Does a service item add stock?
They are services, not jewellery, so you do not create tags for them.
Can I change the GST % later?
Yes, edit the item. See Change GST percentage.
